America's fastest growing motor sport, rock crawling is an extreme form of off road driving using vehicles anywhere from stock to highly modified to overcome obstacles. Rock crawling is a highly technical category of off roading. Real rock crawling is not for the faint of heart. It is a pure adrenaline awesome outdoor sport.
Rock crawling is four wheel drive vehicles of an extreme nature going over the most incredible obstacles imaginable. Vehicles are typically modified with larger than stock tires, suspension components that allow greater axle articulation, and changes in the differential gear ratio in order to provide the ideal high torque/low speed operation for rock crawling to traverse obstacles.
There are basically three different categories, outdoors in nature in the mountainous areas, outdoors on man-built obstacle courses, and the lastest phase, indoor man-made event courses. The man-made course rivals anything nature can offer and will test the skills of any week-end or professionals driver.
Most rock crawler drivers use a spotter to help guide them through the various courses and challenges. It helps give the driver information about areas of the terrain he or she may not be able to see. Most drivers find that driving slow keeps the vehicle in one piece with less wear and tear.
There is something for everyone, drivers enjoy the fun challenge and spectators have the thrill of waiting for them to screw up. Rock crawling is all about modifing a factory vehicle to your own ideals, then taking it where it is not suppose to go, planning on breaking it, fixing it and doing it all over again. Use extreme caution and good judgment and this pastime may prove to be a great challenge and a lot of fun.
