The fastest motor sport in the WORLD! Airplane racing is cool. Problem is, that its highly dangerous. The difference between a car and a plane is that if your roll cage disconnects from the rest of the plane mid-air, it isn't quite 4 feet to get to the ground. Airplane racing is all about No Guts No Glory!
The sport of racing airplanes occurs either over a predetermined course or cross-country up to transcontinental limits. Air racing dates back to 1909, when the first international meet was held at Reims, France.
Air racing got its start in the United States when newspaperman Ralph Pulitzer offered a trophy to promote high-speed flight. He did this because American aircraft were making a poor showing in European air races. The first Pulitzer race was held at Mitchel Field, Long Island, New York, on November 27,1920.
The common bonds of air racers are many and include the excitement of testing personal pilot or aircraft building skills against others. The camaraderie that develops with shared flying adventures and the desire share the sport of general aviation offers power sports excitement at it highest level. It isnt cheap, planes are high cost and high maintenance.
It is one of the most exhilarating experiences a pilot and spectators can have. To some, it's a sport. To those who enjoy it, it's a way of life.
